Acne can be a persistent problem affecting people of all age groups. The effects of acne on the appearance forces one to take any available treatment which will give an instant cure. But unfortunately there are no such options available so far. A reasonable time period of at least one to two weeks is needed to get rid of the symptoms. Of the many treatments available for the cure of acne, acne light treatment has hogged the limelight recently as one of the most preferred routes for curing acne.
Light treatment consists of exposure to bright light, blue or red, for an appropriate period of time. The light used, comes from sources such as lasers, LEDs, fluorescent lamps, dichroic lamps or very bright spectrum light. Light treatment is found to be very effective in treating acne conditions curing conditions like delayed sleep phase syndrome and psoriasis.
Sunlight has been known for centuries as a source for curing many ailments and proven as an effective healing agent in case of acne due to the ultraviolet rays present in it. This is found to have a marked anti-bacterial effect which is favorable in treating the blemishes. However artificial ultraviolet rays are not as effective.
Light treatment is done in various forms like red and blue phototherapy, LHE phototherapy, ultraviolet phototherapy and photodynamic therapy. All these treatments although effective in treating acne, have their own disadvantages like progressive skin damage, destruction of vitamin A and vitamin C, free radical generation and DNA breaks.
Also light treatment is contra indicated in cases of photosensitivity, photo toxicity, and porphyria. But almost 70% of cases show curability and significant improvement in their conditions after receiving light treatment. Also, acne light treatment remains a viable option for those people for whom the other methods of treatment are not effective or feasible.
